Dear HBO

...I'm kind of intrigued by your new series - The Leftovers.  It's an interesting premise, and it seems to have some real potential.

But there's one little problem.  The flag patch on Garvey's right shoulder is backwards.  Protocol requires the field of stars always to be on the forward edge - ie: never "in retreat".

Just a nit I felt needed pickin'.

  1. There is no requirement which dictates the placement of flags on the left sleeve or right sleeve of a municipal police uniform. In addition, there in no requirement that the American flag on municipal police department uniforms have the union (the blue part with the stars) on the viewer's left or right. Police uniforms are vary across the country from state to state, and city to city. It is up to the department which designs the uniform.

You seem to be confusing the uniforms of a fictional police department with the uniforms of the U.S. military. They have a rule which requires the placement of flag patches in the manner you have described.

  2. APS221 - Like I said, "pickin' the nits". And I really don't care about it all that much - I think the veneration of something that could just as well be a table cloth is more than a little silly - but I'll stand by my contention. There's a prescribed manner of display for US military uniforms, and since there's nothing I've found saying specifically that cops get to do whatever they want, I think the general rules apply. ie: the flag is never in retreat.

Thanks for checkin' - I appreciate the traffic.

  3. No. There is no prescribed flag patch display rules for municipal police uniforms. There is no rule saying "cops can do whatever they want." There is also no rule saying cops can't do whatever they want. The fact that there is no rule covering flag patches on municipal police unforms does not mean that the military rules apply to them.
