Today's Nature Tip

How to tell the difference between a black bear and a grizzly bear:

Climb a tree.

If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black bear.

If the bear knocks the tree down and eats you, it's a grizzly.

  1. I learned how to avoid bears, protect myself, and differentiate between black bear grizzly bear scat when I was a Boy Scout:

Tie little bells to your pack to make noise so that you don't startle bears and they have time to leave the area. Also carry pepper spray in case you have to fight a one off.

You can always recognize black bear scat by the presence of partially digested acorns, berries, and little bits of fur. Grizzly bear scat smells like pepper spray and has little bells in it.

Bada-bing I'll be here all week.

Tangentially relate: Chaffetz, the fuck, withdrew his bill to sell off federal lands in the west. Turns out it was not very popular round these parts. Who'd of thunk it? I wouldn't mind giving that guy some bacon underwear and tossing him out in bear country to see how long he would last.

  2. More good tips.
And I hadn't heard about the Chaffetz thing - thanks for that.
