COVID-19 Update

If we can trust the numbers being reported out - and as usual, that's the big if - then we are in fact starting to see a lessening of the more dire consequences of COVID-19 here in USAmerica Inc.

During the worst of it just a few months ago, we were seeing another 2,000 - 2,500 dead Americans every day.

It's not as bad as it was. We've got it down around 800 - 1,000 per day now.

In April, one of us was dying every 30 or 40 seconds. 

The overall rate (February thru today) has slowed to one dead American every 80 - 90 seconds.

But watch out, because we're still the Stoopid Country, and the next surge is always right around the corner.

Here are some significant developments:

• The Trump administration blocked the Food and Drug Administration from regulating a broad swath of laboratory tests, including those used to detect the coronavirus.
• Fears that flu season could collide with the coronavirus pandemic and create an unprecedented threat to public health are prompting officials to expand access to flu shots and tighten vaccination requirements for students.
• Southern states have begun “to turn the tide” on the pandemic, CDC Director Robert Redfield said Thursday. But he warned that “Middle America is stuck right now” and that infection numbers are still too high in states such as Nebraska and Oklahoma.
• Health officials in Collin County, Tex., announced that they have “no confidence” in the state’s coronavirus-tracking data after coding issues led to a backlog that made it look like cases were surging.
• A new lawsuit led by the Service Employees International Union alleges that the nation’s largest health-care chain failed to protect employees, patients and the community against covid-19.
• South Korea recorded its largest daily increase in coronavirus cases since March, as health officials battle a wave of infections linked to a church congregation.
