There's sworn testimony from at least one of Trump's goon squad guys saying that if they'd caught Pence, they intended to kill him.
It's probable these idiots were acting in a very Stochastic way. ie: they were never specifically instructed to kill the Veep, but to them, it was clear that's exactly what Trump wanted "somebody" to do. ("Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest!?")
White House people alerted Pence's security guys to the danger, so this could also have been a ploy to scare Pence out of the building in order to delay the certification procedure.
But that part shouldn't matter. The point is that Trump and his gang plotted a coup, and then put the thing in motion on Jan6.
