Too many of these assholes think threading the needle is what best serves their interests. Like if they can find that tiny patch of Smarm Space, they can finagle a reprieve so they won't be slaughtered by a revenge-crazed punk right along with the rest of us.
So Barr is saying basically that he's fine with the kind of autocratic rule that Trump proposes - it's just that he wants someone other than Trump. That way, it'll be easier to convince stoopid Americans that we're still the healthy thriving democracy we love to pretend we are.
