The con starts with the flimflammer praising your smarts (or your integrity, or whatever), and telling you how sharp you must be for him to have such great confidence in you.
We do eventually catch up. Takes a while. And sometimes we lose more than we can gain back in any kind of hurry. But we can gain it back, and we do, if we exercise our super power - a functional memory.
