On Being Afraid

Fear is a great little motivator.

The boss keeps asking more and more from you, which translates to paying you less, and you keep trying to squeeze just a bit more out of your work day because you fear the consequences if you don't - and the boss knows that.

We get manipulated like this all the time.

If it's a matter of something like fearing for the health of your kids, that's one thing. You take the word of the people who get paid to learn about vaccines, and diets, and behavior modification, and teaching - and and and - because we're generally pretty fearful of what can happen if we fail to do the things parents need to do.

That seems like a healthy-enough kind of fear, and it motivates us to engage in a little Risk Mitigation.

But Press Poodles and politicians and bosses can use that innate fear - which is a driver of our Survival Instinct - as a way to cynically manipulate us (Chomsky's Manufactured Consent), so they keep us coming back, or they can talk us into doing something we know deep down is wrong - or worse, get us to think doing the wrong thing is the right thing to do, then we've got a big fuckin' problem.

once you're convinced of the absurdities
you'll be ready to commit the atrocities
