People who are registered 'Independent' are the big squishy middle. And that's where you find those unbelievably annoying 'swing voters' - the ones who insist on saying they just can't quite decide between a candidate who's pretty normal but maybe kinda boring, and one who's been convicted of dog-fucking, and refuses to say he won't bomb the Vatican or some-fuckin'-thing.
So when you're 57 points underwater with Independents, you're not going to get yourself elected to anything, and your 'coat tails' won't get any of your boot-lickin' buddies past a primary.
