Obviously, the Ukrainians are going to pick the guys who're willing to fess up. And while I still have to take this with big grains of salt, there's something here that rings true for me.
Maybe the Ukrainian Intell people are just extraordinarily good at making it all look exactly like they want it to look, but there are too many Russians telling the same kind of story - but in different ways - to be a total setup.
And maybe the Russian soldiers are so mercenary they're being bought off with a few bucks and a promise of sanctuary. But if that's the case, then it just reinforces the impression that the Russian military has sunk to a level of corruption that makes it all but impossible for them to conduct any kind of tactical operations in the field - which is in keeping with my theory that Putin and his buddies have hollowed out the Russian military the same way they've hollowed out every other aspect of Russian nationhood.
