Putin has to put a "win" up on the board, and he has to do it pretty soon.

After 4½ months (which seems a lot longer to us - imagine how long it seems to Ukrainians), Putin's chance to score the quick knockout is obviously way gone, and even though he's making some progress in Donbas, he's "losing by not winning".

Weapons and ammo being supplied from the west, and training, recruitment, and morale are all strong for the Ukrainians - and sanctions continue to bite - and the Russian economy can't be artificially propped up forever, so Putin has to rely on the western allies getting bored, and fatigued, and not wanting to be further inconvenienced for the sake of a bunch of non-NATO peasants.
