How Green Was My Campaign Fund

Playing both ends against the middle - and vice versa

Those bills again are:

  • 2013: HB 2261
  • 2014: SB 459 and HB 848
  • 2015: SB 1334 and SB 1349
  • 2017: HB 1760 and HB 2291
I didn't check all the bills mentioned, but the ones I did check were all passed by percentages in the 90s - like a couple of votes short of unanimous.

The old saw holds that sausage-making is an ugly thing.

And the closer you look, the uglier it gets, especially when big corporations have government locked in a grip that seems unbreakable.

But it's not any worse now than it was in the early 20th century.

That doesn't mean we just sit on our asses and wait for shit to get better - that should be obvious, but that's exactly what an awful lot of us seem to be doing.

Anyway, it's not easy; it's not supposed to be easy; the fact that it's hard to do is partly what makes it worth doing.

"We choose to go to the Moon. We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win."

A Tyranny Of Images

This one's pretty good:

I'm just glad CNN is pushing back with a little vim and vigor - finally.  They have a good ways to go yet before I stop calling them Press Poodles, but I like the direction it's headed.

Of course, there has to be the parody:

Oh yeah - BTW - none of that shit is either an apple or a banana. They're images of bananas and apples.

There is truth where you find it. Accept nothing at face value.

The Trump Scampaign®

Aside from a few - Jeb, Kasich, McCain, and some others - Repubs "running" for POTUS have had a distinct aroma. Take it, John:

It's been said before, by people smarter than me - and as such, bears repeating as long as the grass grows and the wind blows - Trump is not some kind of weird anomaly. Trump is doing what the GOP has spent 30 years telling their voters to look for, and prodding them to vote for.

And BTW - try not to think about the fact that Nu-Skin is very much the reason Jason Chaffetz is in office:
Accused in several states of operating an illegal pyramid scheme, the Provo-based multilevel marketing firm has decided to mount an offensive. Nu Skin takes issue with the way national and local media have portrayed the company."Enough is enough," said Jason Chaffetz, Nu Skin administrative assistant for public relations. "We're frustrated and disturbed that a number of inaccuracies continue to be perpetuated."

About Last Nite

Some semi-random thoughts on The ShamWow Meeting in Cleveland.

The theme du jour yesterday was "Make America Work Again".  Let's leave aside the imagery invoked by that phrasing - Rich Rent Collectors and Forced Labor - and think for a short little moment about what the speakers had to say last night.

I heard an awful lot of the usual Hillary Bashing, but with the exception of two women who spoke pretty well about their own experiences in business (this is a 5-day bender celebrating USAmerica Inc's reigning champion of shameless self-promotion, so why would you not try to cash in?), there really wasn't much talk about jobs and opportunities for regular folk etc - it was all "fuck China" and "fuck Mexico" and "fuck the immigrants and poor people" and "your jobs were sent to other countries by The Kenyan Usurper while the noble wealth creators had nothing to do with any of that, so let's put Hillary in prison because email!"

I caught a little bit of MSNBC's after-party thing, where one of the analysts said he Word-Clouded the text of the speeches, and the word "work" was so far down the list as to be nearly invisible.

I think Mr Priebus needs to shift the focus a little and maybe try "Make This Dog-Ass Convention Work." The attendance is sparse, and the "crowds" just aren't into it.  There were at least two speakers who used the standard Call-n-Response thing, and it was more than a little pathetic. When the speakers have to start the USA USA chant, and it runs outa steam before the middle-aged drunk ladies in the cute red white and blue cowboy hats can get on their feet - well, it's a problem.

I'll look for something good about Trump Jr's speech and get back to y'all later.

Why I Love it

Well, to be a little clearer, I love parts of the silly season - I'm gettin' pretty tired of the Silly Season That Won't Fucking End, but there are certain things about it that I do still truly love.

This for instance:

Somebody always comes out with a version of this, and I love that part of the silly season a lot.

It might be a repeat - don't know and don't care.

Bad Lip Reading

It would appear Mr Poe has gone mainstream now, as it gets harder and harder to tell the parodies from the "real thing".
