CDC Guidance:

How COVID-19 Spreads:
COVID-19 is thought to spread mainly through close contact from person-to-person. Some people without symptoms may be able to spread the virus. We are still learning about how the virus spreads and the severity of illness it causes.

Person-to-person spread:

  • The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.
  • Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).
  • Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks.
  • These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.
  • COVID-19 may be spread by people who are not showing symptoms.
  • The virus spreads easily between people
How easily a virus spreads from person-to-person can vary. Some viruses are highly contagious, like measles, while other viruses do not spread as easily. Another factor is whether the spread is sustained, which means it goes from person-to-person without stopping.

The virus that causes COVID-19 is spreading very easily and sustainably between people.

Information from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic suggest that this virus is spreading more efficiently than influenza, but not as efficiently as measles, which is highly contagious.

The virus does not spread easily in other ways:

COVID-19 is a new disease and we are still learning about how it spreads. It may be possible for COVID-19 to spread in other ways, but these are not thought to be the main ways the virus spreads.
  • From touching surfaces or objects. It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes. This is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads, but we are still learning more about this virus.
  • From animals to people. At this time, the risk of COVID-19 spreading from animals to people is considered to be low. Learn about COVID-19 and pets and other animals.
  • From people to animals. It appears that the virus that causes COVID-19 can spread from people to animals in some situations. CDC is aware of a small number of pets worldwide, including cats and dogs, reported to be infected with the virus that causes COVID-19, mostly after close contact with people with COVID-19. Learn what you should do if you have pets.
Protect yourself and others
  • The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. You can take steps to slow the spread.
  • Maintain good social distance (about 6 feet). This is very important in preventing the spread of COVID-19.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
  • Routinely clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces.

COVID-19 Update

More good news: CDC is telling us now that COVID-19 doesn't persist on surfaces as once believed.

WaPo:

The coronavirus primarily spreads from person to person and not easily from a contaminated surface. That is the takeaway from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which this month updated its “How COVID-19 Spreads” website.

The revised guidance now states, in headline-size type, “The virus spreads easily between people.” It also notes that the coronavirus, which causes the disease covid-19, “is spreading very easily and sustainably between people.”

The CDC made another key change to its website, clarifying what sources are not major risks. Under the new heading “The virus does not spread easily in other ways,” the agency explains that touching contaminated objects or surfaces does not appear to be a significant mode of transmission. The same is true for exposure to infected animals.

The bad news is that the warning in that 2nd paragraph will be discounted, which means a shitload of Americans will blow off more of the precautions, which means we're prob'ly already setting ourselves up for another wave even before the first one has ebbed.

The intertoobz are filled with Keiths and Karens who think da gubmint is trampling on their god-given right to shop at CostCo naked.

Today's Riddle

Q: What borders on stupidity?

A: Mexico and Canada

Overheard

  • We need clean drinking water
  • We should try not to infect each other with a deadly disease
  • We should listen to the advice of doctors and scientists and others who know about this stuff
  • Don't shit where you eat
Here in USAmerica Inc, in 2020, these are statements of partisan ideology.

COVID-19 Update

It seems pretty grim - the first thing I do every day is look at the casualty counts. And because President Stoopid has decided it's more about him than anything else, I have to spend time and energy reminding myself not to root for more death.

The good news is that the growth rate has been down around 1.01 or 1.02 for days now.

And I don't know what the bad news is yet, but stick around - it'll be here soon enough.

Lying Liars & The Lies They Tell Us

Rand Paul is a fucking liar.

Sweden has now overtaken the UK, Italy and Belgium to have the highest coronavirus per capita death rate in the world, throwing its decision to avoid a strict lockdown into further doubt.

According to figures collated by the Our World in Data website, Sweden had 6.08 deaths per million inhabitants per day on a rolling seven-day average between May 13 and May 20.

This is the highest in the world, above:

UK at 5.57

Belgium at 4.28

and

USA at 4.11
